This website is maintained by the team at Amsterdam & Partners LLP, an international law firm which represents the Ugandan Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine). The firm was retained to assist in Kyagulanyi’s international defence effort shortly following his arrest on August 14, 2018.
Shortly following his arrest, Mr. Kyagulanyi was allegedly subjected to serious physical abuse, with potential lifelong damages. Though released from military court martial, he remains in pretrial detention over civil charges of treason.
In a press release announcing the firm’s engagement, founding partner Robert Amsterdam described his client’s arrest as a “politically motivated act of repression” by the Government of Uganda. The firm is working closely with Kyagulanyi’s local team of lawyers and advisors to seek international remedies and advocacy to halt the state’s abuse of him and numerous others.
Mr. Amsterdam has denounced Uganda’s treatment of Kyagulanyi and other opposition lawmakers, citing violations of their internationally guaranteed political and human rights. This incident, he says, “requires a robust and broad response from the international community to secure his safety and to bring his torturers to account.”
